The Uttar Pradesh government, under CM Yogi Adityanath, took a big step for students with the start of the “Chevening-UP Scholarship Yojana.” This new scholarship scheme aims to help talented students from Uttar Pradesh study for a master’s degree at top universities in the United Kingdom.
The Uttar Pradesh government and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tuesday (19th August) to launch the scheme.
Opportunity for Bright Minds
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the scheme with great excitement. According to him, this plan will prepare the young people of Uttar Pradesh to become global leaders. It gives the brightest students the chance to get an international education. As a result, they can focus on research and develop leadership skills. The scholarship is named in honour of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Under this scheme, five meritorious students will receive scholarships every year to pursue their master’s degrees at prestigious UK universities. The government will support the expenses, covering up to ₹23 lakh for each student. The total cost per student may be between ₹45 to 48 lakh.
Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree. They must also apply to three eligible master’s courses in the UK. Additionally, they need to secure an unconditional offer from at least one.
The scholarship program is planned to run for three years. It will start from the academic year 2025-26 to 2028-29. After this, officials will review and renew the scheme if needed. This move is expected to create many well-educated youths. They will be capable of contributing to both national and international fields.

According to CM Yogi Adityanath, “This scheme will help the youth of Uttar Pradesh gain recognition not just at the national level but also on international platforms.”
The partnership with the UK’s FCDO reflects a strong collaboration between India and the UK in the education and development sectors. The Chevening Scholarships already have international recognition for nurturing future leaders. Now, UP students will have a better chance to join this elite group.
