The Public Works Department (PWD) has started a large-scale pothole-filling drive across Uttar Pradesh. The department aims to repair 50,000 kilometres of damaged roads before Diwali. The project will cost around ₹400 crore.
1.22 Lakh Roads Under PWD
Uttar Pradesh has about 1.22 lakh roads under the PWD, with a total length of 2.70 lakh kilometres. This year, above-normal rainfall worsened the condition of many roads. Reports from different divisions indicate that around 50,000 kilometres of roads have developed potholes. These will be repaired through patchwork before the festive season.
Roads for Durga Puja by September 22
PWD has given special instructions to prioritise the roads leading to Durga Puja pandals. The department has already started repairs to make these routes pothole-free within the next 10–12 days. The officials plan to complete the work by September 22, ensuring smooth traffic movement during the festival.
Remaining Roads by October 20
PWD has set another deadline for the remaining stretches. All other damaged roads will be repaired by October 20, so that by Diwali, major routes across the state will be in better condition.
Budget Increased from Last Year
Last year, PWD spent ₹340 crore on patch repairs. This year, the budget has been increased to ₹400 crore to extend the reach of the campaign and ensure faster completion of road repair works.
