After 41 days of his return from space, Shubhanshu Shukla arrived in Lucknow. He was accompanied by his wife Kamna and six-year-old son Kiaansh. Hundreds of people and school children dressed as astronauts welcomed him at the airport. The crowd waved the Indian flag, played drums, and chanted “Bharat Mata ki Jai” in excitement. Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak personally received him at the airport. Shukla then rode a Thar jeep and switched to a special parade vehicle for a roadshow through the city, ending at his school, City Montessori School (CMS). People lined the roads to greet him, celebrating his journey as a triumph for Lucknow and India.
Felicitations by the CM Yogi
Shukla, his wife, and his son visited Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s residence at 3:30 PM. The Chief Minister welcomed them at the gate, presented flowers and a warm greeting. Shukla was honoured at a special event at Lok Bhavan, where Deputy Chief Ministers and the Mayor also congratulated him and his family. A short film depicting Shukla’s mission and space experiments was screened at the program. It added to the excitement and pride in his achievement.
Scholarship in Shukla’s Name
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a new scholarship under Shukla’s name for students interested in space technology. This scholarship will support students who wish to pursue higher studies in space engineering and research. CM Yogi highlighted that three years ago, Uttar Pradesh had no courses in space technology, but now more than twelve colleges offer specialised programs. He also directed the state’s Science and Technology Department to use Shukla’s knowledge to help students and the department develop further.
State Guest Status and Special Security
Uttar Pradesh’s government awarded Shubhanshu Shukla the status of ‘State Guest’. All arrangements for his security and stay were managed, including accommodation at the State Guest House in Lucknow. A Deputy Superintendent of Police was assigned to ensure his safety, and escorted vehicles accompanied him throughout his movements in the city. These gestures reflected the respect and pride the state holds for its astronaut.
Emotional School Reception
At CMS, Shukla received a touching welcome. His mother Ashawati and sister were invited onto the stage and both grew emotional. His mother hugged him and cried, while Shukla himself became teary-eyed. Students asked Shukla about his training and failures. He answered calmly, encouraging them to pursue their dreams and learn from setbacks. The chairperson of CMS asked Kamna, Shukla’s wife, about her choice to marry an astronaut. Kamna shyly responded, and Shukla praised her visionary thinking, which made the whole hall erupt in applause.
Inspiring India’s Space Ambitions
During the ceremony, Shukla presented CM Yogi with a photo of the cosmos taken during his mission. He spoke about the speed of sunlight reaching Earth and explained his space experiences to the audience, describing how microgravity affects the body-with swelling of the head, slower heartbeats, and floating stomach contents. He remarked that surviving in space is hard, but human engineering makes it possible. Shukla asserted that his mission marks new possibilities for Indian youth and the nation. He mentioned the upcoming Gaganyaan space mission in 2027 and the importance of STEM education for India’s future.
Symbol of Hope and Progress
Shubhanshu Shukla’s visit opened a new chapter in India’s space adventure, giving hope and goals to young students. His journey has brought international attention to Uttar Pradesh’s role in space science. With the state government’s support, scholarships, and newly established courses, more students can now pursue careers in space technology. CM Yogi declared that Shukla’s experience will help in issues like climate change, disaster management, and technological progress, benefiting the entire state and country.
Record-Breaking Space Journey
Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla became the first Indian to visit the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the Axiom-4 mission. He spent 18 days in space, orbiting the Earth more than 320 times. During his mission, Shukla carried out over 60 scientific experiments, with seven designed by Indian researchers. These experiments covered important subjects like muscle regeneration, microbial growth, crop viability, and cognitive performance in microgravity. His mission ended on July 15, 2025, and he returned to India on August 17. On August 18, he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and received national praise for his achievement.
Shukla spent the evening resting at Naimisharanya Guest House in Hazratganj, joined by his wife, son, and parents. His return marked a proud moment for his family, city, and the country. The astronaut’s achievements and the warm welcome show India’s readiness to reach for the stars, and inspire the next generation to dream big and achieve even bigger.
