Ghaziabad Transporter Couple Caught in Nepal Violence; Husband Survives Fourth-Floor Jump, Wife Dies

On September 8, the couple spent the entire day exploring Kathmandu. But late at night on September 9, their journey took a tragic turn. Rioters set the hotel on fire.

Ramveer Singh Gola (58), a transporter from Master Colony in Ghaziabad’s Nandgram area, went to Nepal on September 7 with his wife, Rajesh Devi (55). On the first day of their trip, they reached Kathmandu, offered prayers at the Pashupatinath Temple, and showed the beautiful sights to their family over a video call. Afterwards, they checked into the Hyatt Regency hotel.

On September 8, the couple spent the entire day exploring Kathmandu. But late at night on September 9, their journey took a tragic turn. Rioters set the hotel on fire. The sudden incident triggered chaos, smoke, and panic everywhere.

Jump from the Fourth Floor to Save Their Lives

The flames quickly engulfed the entire hotel. Trapped on the fourth floor, Ramveer and Rajesh searched for an escape route. When they couldn’t find one, they jumped down to save their lives. The rescue team had placed mattresses below, which saved them, but Rajesh sustained severe injuries.

Their younger son, Vishal, explained that on the night of September 9, smoke filled the entire building, and both the staircase and elevator stopped working. Breathing became difficult. His father broke a glass window, threw down a mattress, and jumped with the help of a bedsheet. But his mother, already weak, lost her grip on the sheet and hit the ground hard, suffering critical injuries.

Around 11 p.m., the army arrived and took Rajesh in a jeep, but despite available space, they did not allow Ramveer to accompany her. A young man tried to take Ramveer on a scooter, but the scooter got punctured on the way. After many struggles, Ramveer finally reached the cantonment.

Meanwhile, the family sought help from the embassy and local people to search for hospitals. Eventually, they learned that injured patients had been shifted to Bir and Teaching hospitals. At around 3 a.m., a call informed them that Rajesh had passed away. The post-mortem was conducted with great difficulty the next day because doctors were on leave. The embassy has now confirmed that her body will be airlifted to India.

After the incident, the ongoing violence in Nepal disrupted communication services. The family in Ghaziabad desperately tried to make contact but could not succeed.

Succumbed During Treatment

Doctors admitted Rajesh to the hospital in a severely injured condition. Despite two days of treatment, her condition did not improve, and she died on Thursday. Her husband, Ramveer, was later found in a relief camp and is now returning to Ghaziabad with her body. The cremation will take place today (September 12).

The news of Rajesh’s death plunged the entire family into grief. Her two sons are now standing by their father, while the whole neighbourhood mourns her loss.
