Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Saturday (23 August) that India would soon begin exporting electric vehicles (EVs) to 100 countries. He made the announcement while addressing the Economic Times World Leaders Forum.
Modi said a “very big program” linked to this initiative will take place on Tuesday, 26 August, though he did not share further details.
“I want to tell you about another achievement of India. India is now going to export electric vehicles to 100 countries ofthe world. A very big program related to this is also being held after two days on 26 August,” he said.
India’s First Domestic Chip to Hit Market in 2025
The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s progress in the semiconductor sector. He said the country’s first domestically manufactured semiconductor chip will enter the market by the end of this year.
He admitted that India missed the semiconductor opportunity decades ago but stressed that the nation has now turned the situation around.
“We all know that semiconductor manufacturing could have started in India 50–60 years ago, but India missed that too. Today, we have changed this situation. Semiconductor-related factories have started coming up in India,” he said.
Growing Semiconductor Ecosystem in India
Under the India Semiconductor Mission, several key projects are already underway.
- Tata Electronics, in partnership with Taiwan’s PSMC, approved the Fab Plant in Dholera, Gujarat, in February 2024 and will start wafer production by late 2026.
- Micron Technology’s ATMP plant in Sanand, Gujarat began construction in 2023, with phase one becoming operational in early 2025.
- The Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test (TSAT) facility in Morigaon, Assam, approved in February 2024, is expected to begin production in 2025.
- Other projects include CG Power and Kaynes Semicon units in Sanand, and the HCL-Foxconn venture near Jewar Airport, Uttar Pradesh, approved in May 2025.
India’s Strategy for Future Growth
These developments mark a major push to build an indigenous semiconductor ecosystem and promote India as a hub for green mobility and advanced technology. With plans to launch Made-in-India chips and export EVs widely, India now aims to strengthen its role in the global supply chain.
