On Sunday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated a green hydrogen plant at Khanipur village near Khajni block in Gorakhpur. This will be the first green hydrogen plant in the state. It’s the second of its kind in the country. Torrent Group entities, Torrent Power and Torrent Gas, will set up the plant, which will reduce carbon emissions significantly. The plant will have an annual production capacity of 72,000 tonnes per annum, the group said in a statement.
“The Green Hydrogen produced at the plant will be blended with natural gas in Torrent Gas’ City Gas Distribution infrastructure in Gorakhpur, maintaining its concentration up to 2 per cent,” it said.
‘Energy of the Future’ Says Yogi Adityanath
Addressing a gathering on the occasion, Yogi ji called it a milestone in the clean energy transition. Yogi ji said, “Green energy may seem costly today, but just like mobile phones, it will soon become affordable for every household. This clean energy will not only power homes and industries but will also change the destiny of the world.” He further added, green hydrogen represents the “energy of the future” and would play a decisive role in protecting biodiversity, reducing carbon emissions and improving human health.
He reminded the audience that the greatest challenge before humanity is to save biodiversity and protect civilisation. Yogi ji stressed that reducing carbon emissions is necessary for safeguarding life on Earth. He said renewable energy is the way forward. The new plant, he added, will improve public health, protect the environment, and boost innovation in the energy sector.

He also pointed out that Gorakhpur already has a CNG unit of Torrent Group. The addition of a green hydrogen plant, he said, makes the city a leader in clean fuel efforts.
The facility will blend green hydrogen with CNG and PNG. This will supply cleaner cooking fuel to households. It will also support industries with sustainable fuel.
UP’s Potential as a Green Hydrogen Hub
Uttar Pradesh has great potential in green hydrogen because of its abundant water resources. This advantage could help the state become a hub of green hydrogen production. The UP Government under the leadership of Yogi Adityanath looks serious about sustainable growth and conservation of environment, culture and civilization. The inauguration of the green hydrogen plant is part of that vision.
Green hydrogen is hydrogen gas produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen. The process uses electricity generated from renewable sources like solar and wind. No fossil fuel is used. The term “green” refers to the clean production process, not the colour of the gas.
The Gorakhpur facility marks a big step in India’s shift to clean fuels. By blending hydrogen with CNG and PNG, it will show how renewable energy can be applied in daily life.
The Chief Minister said the state will continue to promote such initiatives. He called green hydrogen a symbol of progress and a key to sustainable growth.
